The legend of Mayon Volcano is a popular Philippine folktale that tells the story of two star-crossed lovers, Daragang Magayon and Panganoron. The story is set in the Bicol region of the Philippines, and the volcano itself is located in the province of Albay.
The legend begins with Daragang Magayon, the beautiful daughter of Makusog, the chief of the Ibalon tribe. Magayon was so beautiful that men from all over the land came to see her. One of these suitors was Pagtuga, the chief of a neighboring tribe. Pagtuga was a powerful and wealthy man, but Magayon was not interested in him. Her heart belonged to another.
One day, while Magayon was bathing in the Yawa River, she slipped and fell into the water. She didn’t know how to swim, and she began to drown. Just then, a young warrior named Panganoron was passing by. He saw Magayon struggling and jumped into the river to save her.
Panganoron was able to pull Magayon to safety, and they immediately fell in love. The two of them began to court each other, and soon they were planning to get married. However, their happiness was short-lived.
Pagtuga was furious when he learned that Magayon was going to marry Panganoron. He had been planning to marry Magayon himself, and he was not going to let her go without a fight. Pagtuga gathered his warriors and attacked the Ibalon tribe.
Panganoron fought bravely, but he was outnumbered and outmatched. He was killed in battle, and Magayon was devastated. She refused to marry Pagtuga, even though he threatened to kill her father and destroy her tribe.
In the end, Magayon took her own life. She stabbed herself with a dagger, and her body was buried next to Panganoron’s grave. The people of Ibalon were heartbroken, and they wept for many days.
The next day, the people of Ibalon woke up to find that a new mountain had appeared where Magayon and Panganoron had been buried. The mountain was perfectly cone-shaped and had a beautiful white peak. The people knew that this was the mountain of the two lovers, and they named it Mayon.
The people of Albay still believe that Mayon Volcano is the resting place of Daragang Magayon and Panganoron. They say that the eruptions of the volcano are a sign of the lovers’ undying love.
